You and I, Horizontal

ANTHONY MCCALL, known for his solid light film installations, creates environmental cinema existing in the zone of both the cinematic and the sculptural, creating a powerfully visceral spatial experience out of virtually, nothing. ʻYou and I, Horizontalʼ runs through 20 March.

Anthony McCallʼs work is rooted in performance, installation and experimental film. His early works, including ʻLine Describing a Coneʼ and ʻLong Film for Four Projectorsʼ influenced a generation of artists, including Gordon Matta-Clark and Richard Serra. McCallʼs ʻsolid lightʼ films are projections that sculpt space from beams of light. Projected in haze-filled rooms, the light beams create three-dimensional shapes that continually expand and contract, surrounding the viewer in amorphous ephemeral space.

McCall has exhibited at MOMA, the Whitney, Hirshhorn, SFMOMA, the Serpentine Gallery, the Tate London, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, and the The Kunst Museum in Frankfurt, with recent exhibitions in Cologne, Stockholm, Milan and New Zealand; he is currently working on ʻProjected Columnʼ, the winning commission for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
