JESSE STILES is an electronic composer, performer, installation artist, and software designer. Stiles creates immersive sonic and visual environments that encourage new methods of listening and looking, with musical output ranging from highly experimental to borderline danceable. His work makes use of generative algorithms to control sound, video, light, and robotics, creating synaesthetic compositions that transform space into evolving audiovisual environments. His work has been featured at internationally recognized institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Lincoln Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Park Avenue Armory. Stiles has appeared multiple times at Carnegie Hall, performing as a soloist with electronic instruments. Stiles is Assistant Teaching Professor of Sound Media at Carnegie Mellon University.
Jesse Stiles has created a musical installation work for the festival, Kinderklavierfeld, performed by five robotic toy pianos. The composition performed is not a fixed set of notes, but a mutating algorithm generating notes dynamically and continuously evolving over time. Kinderklavierfeld performs hourly at 20 minutes past the hour, and will be on display in the College of Fine Arts Great Hall as part of the wats:ON Festival.
